The first face-to-face meeting between Zohran Mamdani and President Trump turned out to be anything but what had been anticipated. After months of trading insults, they appeared lighthearted, cordial and convivial before the reporters in the Oval Office on November 21st. One cannot help but wonder what kind of spell Mamdani cast on President Trump during the 45-minute closed-door-meeting, which left Trump infatuated with the man he’d called a “communist,” who had called him “a fascist.”
There were many jaw-dropping moments in the Oval Office where President Trump acted as Mamdani’s supporter and protector. He dismissed Elise Stefanik’s charge of Mamdani as an antisemite and “jihadist” mad man, saying, “I just met with a man who’s a very rational person,” one who allegedly cares about peace in the Middle East. Did Trump realize that his remark would undoubtedly frustrate Stefanik — and her campaign team — currently vying for New York’s governorship? Trump also waved off a question by a reporter about Mamdani’s democratic socialism, claiming that he and the mayor-elect shared many similar ideas, while Trump was willing to put aside their ideological differences.
