Instead of a mob violating our laws, we have the sad spectacle of an entire political party spitting on our Constitution; installing a senile imbecile as president and lying to our nation for four years, as an unelected cabal, including his felonious family members, exercised the power of the president in gross violation of Article II and A 25. The gibbet should be their fate.

While I totally agree with your post, I beg you to consider that wasn’t the whole point of Lincoln’s speech here is that our country is an experiment that, so far, has worked?

And, that we can change the bad laws by legislation instead of mob rule?

And, that we need to stick together and follow those laws (even bad ones) until they have changed?

I’m in total agreement that the dems have been awful. And I know that the wheels of justice turn slowly. Will it happen? I’m hoping and praying that it will.

I too regard this speech to be immortal and extremely appropriate for the current times.

It’s only immortal if you don’t realize Lincoln was a thug and dictator. Just about everything that’s wrong with this country and that many “mainstream” conservatives complain about you can trace back to his dictatorship and the evil war and the Republican Party, then those same “mainstream “ conservatives” glorify this POS. 😂

What an evil hypocrite Lincoln was! This man did nothing but foster hate and revenge toward the southerners who wanted nothing more than to secede from what was purported to be a consensual union of the states. The southern populations had voted to leave the union, but Lincoln wouldn't stand for it. Instead, he took it upon himself to invade, attack, loot pillage, rape and kill the southerners who dared to attempt to leave his sacred union. Lincoln was the beginning of the end of any hope for government of, by and for the people. Dishonest Abe shredded the constitution, and left an example to every president after him that they could do so as well, without any ramifications whatsoever. If the true history of the War of Northern Agression was taught in school, we'd be a much better nation, and look more critically at our federal officials.

What 28 yr. old could write so eloquently today? Mob law has no place in our Republic. Most law-abiding citizens prefer peace and prosperity as well as law and order. Thank you, Emerald, for reminding us of Lincoln's 1838 speech. An historical gem and timely!

Lincoln did not foresee our era, when formerly sober courts make wild and furious judgments.

We find ourselves in a very unique position riding out the despotic lawless wake of previous administration. What is unique is that for the most part the truth will be punishment enough. As we all know the rank Federal band aid needs ripped off and with sunlight cauterize all the wounds and then we all know what is going on and then restart 5 years ahead and billions of dollars saved. Or…..fill the Grand Canyon size pit in with a table spoon.

Wonderful piece Ms. Robinson. We all need occasional immersion in the past so as to be reminded that we can still make lemonade out of a lemon.

To those who condemn Lincoln's strong-arm tactics - I dare you to do better. He kept the place together so that those who came after (you!) would have a chance - COULD have a chance to try again, to do better. Had he not committed his legacy to a series of thuggish methods, you would have no Constitution, or nation to gripe about.

And, this above all, if you are to be consistent in your out-of-context appraisal of the man, then you must also include in your outrage; An Executive Order - sans congressional approval - that sent the US military into the separate states to subdue and force compliance to it! Agree, and get your selective outrage house in order, or your words have not meaning.
